His journey began at the tender age of 17, shouldering the responsibility of providing for his family through stamp dealing. Even amidst the turmoil of World War II, Max persevered, operating his business and ultimately surviving the horrors of Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Post-war, Max’s resilience saw him re-establishing his stamp business in Bratislava, only to face adversity again with the Communist takeover. Escaping to Australia with his wife Eva, he embarked on a new chapter, founding a stamp dealer business in 1950. His iconic shop in Melbourne’s Port Philip Arcade stands as a testament to his enduring passion and dedication. Max Stern’s career spanned over 75 years, nurturing countless collectors and earning him the esteemed title of Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1999.
